Cell-based carriers incorporated antimicrobial coatings on diverse food contact surfaces for preventing cross-contamination of fresh produce

Cross-contamination is a key food safety risk during both harvesting and post-harvest processing of fresh produce. Very few effective intervention approaches are available for reducing cross-contamination risks from diverse contact surfaces processing. Therefore, developing an antimicrobial coating that can be simply applied on diversity highly desirable. This work demonstrates cost-effective one-step approach surfaces, such as plastic films, Sparta brushes, polyfoam sponges. The incorporation chlorine charged yeast cell wall particles (YCWPs) into chitosan-based coatings provides unique advantages in achieving high concentration surface extending the stability chlorine. Approximately 583 nmol/cm2 active bound to coated poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (PVA-co-PE) film after 60 min incubation with bleach at room temperature, which enabled significant activity this coating. An inactivation approximately 3-log 5-log units Listeria innocua organic load (COD = 500 mg/L) were achieved treatment 2 5 min, respectively. YCWPs effectively reduce between produce films.
